Our Story

A tree that will live a hundred years in your garden spends its first years in ours. Every three to five years we lift it from the soil and sculpt its roots — a careful pruning that, repeated across the life of the tree, builds a dense, self-sufficient root ball beneath the ground. When the tree finally travels, it carries everything it needs to take hold again.

Our founder, Carlos Azevedo, learned this method from German and Dutch nurserymen and brought it to thirty-three hectares of open ground in Amarante, in the winter of 2009. Our first customers were those same nurseries in northern Europe — people who demanded that every specimen survive transplanting with the precision of clockwork. It was with them that our standard of quality took shape, before we even had a name.

Then the orders began to arrive closer to home. Private clients building their estates, developers with projects that could not wait, landscapes across Portugal and Spain that called for adult trees. After years of watching their work cross borders, the family could at last see their trees rooting in their own soil. To make sure each specimen arrived exactly as it had left the field, we set up a landscape architecture studio and trained an installation team — an unbroken chain from field to lorry to garden. Today Diaplant works across three integrated divisions: production, design, installation.

Carlos is still in the field, where he has always been. His son, Cláudio, trained in plant genetics, leads the commercial side and the studio. The rest of the family is here too — this is a family business in the fullest sense, built around the same trees and the same table. We grew these trees so you would not have to wait for them — and we install them with the same hands that planted, pruned and shaped them.
