About this Cultivar

'Regent' is a clonal selection of Styphnolobium japonicum (long traded as Sophora japonica), bred to remove the variability of seedling pagoda trees. It carries a vigorous, uniform upright-oval crown with a clear central leader and a half-open canopy of fine, pinnate, glossy foliage, giving the structural consistency an alignment or repeated street planting requires. Mature dimensions reach roughly 15 to 20 m in height and 12 to 15 m across, with medium annual extension.

The defining ornamental phase is the late-season flowering: creamy-white, lightly fragrant pea-flowers borne in large terminal panicles through July to September, when little else of this scale is in bloom. As a clone, 'Regent' reaches flowering age sooner than seedling pagoda trees, which can take decades. Flowering is most reliable and most profuse after a hot summer, so display is fullest in warm-temperate and continental-summer climates and more sporadic in cool, wet maritime seasons.
