Fagus sylvatica reaches 20 to 35 m in cultivation, with mature spreads of 12 to 20 m and a slow, steady growth rhythm that places it among the long-cycle structural species of the European canon alongside Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, and Acer platanoides. The crown is dense, oval to rounded, carrying glossy dark-green elliptic leaves that turn golden bronze in autumn and clothe the smooth, elephant-hide grey bark which becomes the principal winter feature on mature stems. Pollarded and clipped forms have a long history across northern and central Europe, and the species tolerates hard pruning as both hedge and architectural specimen.

Climatically, the species is reliably winter-hardy from USDA zone 4a to 7b, withstanding absolute minima of about minus 30 °C in continental ecotypes; provenance matters for the colder limits, and stock raised under Atlantic conditions should be specified accordingly for severe inland sites. The functional limits sit at the other end of the envelope: heat tolerance is moderate, prolonged summer maxima above 35 °C induce stress, and the species is openly intolerant of urban hard-pit conditions and of waterlogged soils.

Drought tolerance is low and this is the load-bearing caveat. Reliable performance assumes at least 700 mm of well-distributed rainfall, deep moisture-retentive loams, and assured drainage; intense summer droughts have killed mature trees within the native range, and hotter, drier summers across Central and Southern Europe are progressively confining flourishing stands to moister sites. For projects in the Mediterranean basin, the Pannonian lowlands, or low-rainfall continental interiors, Fagus orientalis is a more defensible substitute.

Native across central and western Europe to the Caucasus, with outlying populations in southern Scandinavia and the Cantabrian range, the species prefers acid to neutral well-drained loams and tolerates chalk where rooting depth is sufficient. Deer browsing pressure is low, and the pest and disease profile is unremarkable outside stress-linked borer activity and occasional beech bark disease.
