A canonical European shade and avenue tree for projects in the cool-temperate maritime and submontane zones of Europe, where reliable summer moisture and free-draining loams support the dense, oval-rounded crown that defines the species in landscape use.

About Fagus sylvatica

Fagus sylvatica reaches 20 to 35 m in cultivation, with mature spreads of 12 to 20 m and a slow, steady growth rhythm that places it among the long-cycle structural species of the European canon alongside Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, and Acer platanoides. The crown is dense, oval to rounded, carrying glossy dark-green elliptic leaves that turn golden bronze in autumn and clothe the smooth, elephant-hide grey bark which becomes the principal winter feature on mature stems. Pollarded and clipped forms have a long history across northern and central Europe, and the species tolerates hard pruning as both hedge and architectural specimen.

Climatically, the species is reliably winter-hardy from USDA zone 4a to 7b, withstanding absolute minima of about minus 30 °C in continental ecotypes; provenance matters for the colder limits, and stock raised under Atlantic conditions should be specified accordingly for severe inland sites.
