About this Species

Juvenile trees hold a regular conical to pyramidal form on a single straight trunk, with whorls of horizontal, upward-arching branches and rope-like branchlets clothed in stiff, triangular scale-like leaves about 3 to 5 cm long. Individual leaves persist on the stem for ten to fifteen years, giving the crown an unusually dense, reptilian texture year-round. With maturity the lower branches are shed and the crown opens into the characteristic umbrella silhouette on a clean grey-brown ridged trunk. In European cultivation, expect 12 to 20 m in height over many decades, with a crown spread of 5 to 10 m and a growth rate consistently below 30 cm per year.

Climate envelope is the controlling specification variable.
