English Yew ‘Fastigiata Robusta’ · Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Robusta’

This is the most compact and erect of the upright yews, holding a narrow, tightly branched column that stays denser and more vertical than the familiar 'Fastigiata'. The needles are dark, glossy, and slightly longer than the species type. In early spring it carries conspicuous flowers, followed by fleshy red fruits in late summer on female plants. Growth is slow, which keeps the form tight and the clipping interval long.

The slow rate is an asset for specification: the column holds its outline for years with one light trim, making it dependable as a repeated structural element in an alameda, a formal parterre, or a narrow screen where a broader conifer would outgrow its space. Mature height runs to 8 to 15 metres with a 5 to 10 metre spread over a long timescale, but in formal use it is held well below this by routine clipping.

Yew tolerates a wide range of soils and is among the most reliable evergreens for calcareous, limestone-derived ground, which suits much of the Lisbon and Algarve coastal strip. Deep, free-draining soil is the one firm requirement: the species will not tolerate waterlogging, so heavy or poorly drained sites in the humid Minho need raised planting or improved drainage. It accepts full sun through to deep shade, an unusual latitude that lets it hold form in shaded courtyards.

Drought tolerance is moderate and develops with establishment, so in the hot interior Alentejo a single establishment irrigation cycle through the first summers is advisable; once rooted it is undemanding. Pests and disease are few in Portuguese conditions. All parts except the red aril flesh are toxic if ingested, which the specifier should flag where schemes border schools or grazing.
