Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’

Bushy and rounded in habit, this hybrid of Photinia glabra and Photinia serratifolia carries leathery, glossy dark green leaves that are punctuated, several times a season, by flushes of brilliant cherry-red new growth at the shoot tips. In Portuguese cultivation it matures to three to four metres in height and two to three metres in spread, holding a compact, well-furnished crown to the ground; left unclipped on a sheltered site it can reach six metres over fifteen to twenty years. Small white flowers in terminal corymbs follow in spring, succeeded by persistent red pomes that are ornamental only and should not be eaten.

Performance across much of Portugal is reliable. The plant accepts full sun to partial shade and grows in loam, sand, or limestone-derived soils across the acid-to-alkaline pH range, asking only for free drainage and good air movement around the foliage. It tolerates moderate frost and urban pollution, and establishes well in Greater Lisbon, the Algarve, and the Atlantic-influenced Minho and Douro. On the hottest interior Alentejo sites it benefits from a single establishment irrigation cycle and shelter from the most exposed south-westerly aspects.

For the landscape professional the value is functional. The cultivar responds vigorously to clipping, and each cut stimulates a fresh flush of red leaves, so a routine spring and late-summer trim serves both as a maintenance task and as an ornamental event. It serves as formal or informal hedge (sebe), as a tall border (bordadura alta) in mixed planting, as a clipped framework block in praça or quinta schemes, and as an isolated feature where evergreen mass is wanted.

The cultivar shows useful resistance to Entomosporium leaf spot, the disease that has reduced use of the parent hybrid in humid climates. Site with good air circulation, avoid overhead irrigation, and the plant performs steadily across Portuguese conditions.
