Yulan Magnolia ‘Yellow River’ · Magnolia denudata ‘Yellow River’

This cultivar reaches 6 to 8 metres in height with a spread of 3 to 5 metres, forming a rounded, densely branched crown on a single or low-branched stem. Growth rate is slow, and the tree develops its definitive form over 15 to 20 years. The cup-shaped flowers, 12 to 15 cm across, open in February to April before leaf emergence. Their colour ranges from pale yellow to yellow-cream, a tone rare among magnolias and distinct from the white flowers of the parent species M. denudata. The flowers carry the characteristic lemon fragrance of the Yulan group.

In Portuguese conditions, 'Yellow River' performs best in the humid northwest, from the Minho south through Greater Porto and the Douro Litoral. Annual rainfall above 900 mm and mild winters suit it well. Diaplant grows this cultivar in Amarante, where the Atlantic-influenced climate provides a reliable reference for its behaviour in the region. In Greater Lisbon, the tree can succeed in irrigated garden settings with protection from reflected heat and afternoon exposure. The interior Alentejo and the Algarve present serious limitations: summer temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, low rainfall, and calcareous soils are outside this cultivar's tolerance. Frost remains a concern everywhere, as the early flowers brown at even moderate frost events. Siting against a south-facing wall or within a courtyard provides the microclimate protection that the flowers require.

Soil requirements are specific. The tree demands acidic to neutral pH (below 7.0), fertile, deep, and well-drained ground. It does not tolerate calcareous or compacted substrates. In the granitic soils common around Porto and in the Minho, it establishes without amendment. In the Lisbon basin, where soils trend alkaline, localised soil preparation with organic matter and sulphur-based amendment is advisable. Salt tolerance is low, ruling out coastal frontline planting and estuarine exposure.

Maintenance is moderate. Irrigation during the first three summers after planting is essential; in the northwest, supplementary watering in July and August supports flowering vigour in subsequent seasons. Formative pruning, if needed, should follow immediately after flowering to avoid removing the following year's flower buds. The thin bark is susceptible to mechanical damage, so a mulched root zone is advisable in park settings. No significant pest or disease pressure is recorded in Portuguese conditions, though grey mould (Botrytis) may affect spent flowers in wet springs.
