Key Facts
About this Cultivar
'Worplesdon' is the most widely specified Liquidambar cultivar in European ornamental arboriculture, valued for a narrow pyramidal crown reaching 15 to 20 metres in height and 6 to 8 metres in spread at maturity. The form is upright and balanced on a single straight stem, well suited to street alignment (arruamento) and avenue planting where lateral clearance to facades and infrastructure is constrained. Growth rate is moderate, with canopy structure legible from the second or third season after planting.
The palmate, deeply lobed leaves are glossy mid-green from spring through summer, then turn a sustained mix of red, orange and purple in autumn, typically more uniform and earlier than seedling material of the parent species. Grey, lightly ridged bark and the persistent spherical, spiny fruit extend ornamental interest into winter. Full sun exposure produces the most reliable colour, which is the principal reason for specifying this cultivar over a generic Liquidambar.

The species accepts acidic, alkaline, sandy and clay soils provided drainage is adequate, but performs best on fertile, fresh, well-drained ground. In the humid Minho and Douro, where Diaplant field-grows the trees in Amarante under roughly 950 mm annual rainfall, the cultivar establishes readily and reaches full autumn intensity. In urban Lisbon and the interior Alentejo, deep planting and a single establishment irrigation cycle are advisable; mature specimens then tolerate the summer drought and reflected heat of paved settings, though irrigated parks and praças will yield the strongest colour.
Disease and pest pressure are low under Portuguese conditions, and the species tolerates urban air pollution and moderate soil compaction. The persistent fruit can become litter on hard surfaces; specifiers placing the tree over heavily-used pavement should account for this in the maintenance brief. For framework planting in alamedas, residential alignments and park edges where vertical structure and a defined autumn phase are required, 'Worplesdon' is a defensible specification across all major Portuguese climate zones.
