Sweet Gum ‘Paarl’ · Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Paarl’

‘Paarl’ matures at 12 to 18 m tall with a spread of 6 to 8 m, forming a pyramidal to oval crown on a straight central leader. The habit is narrower and more regular than seedling-grown Liquidambar styraciflua, which makes it suitable for formal arruamentos where uniform spacing and canopy line matter. Growth rate is moderate, and the wood is somewhat brittle, so formative pruning in the first years after planting should establish a sound scaffold structure with well-spaced laterals.

The primary specification value of ‘Paarl’ is its autumn colour. Where seedling trees vary widely from yellow through orange to purple, ‘Paarl’ produces a reliably intense display in deep scarlet, purple and orange across the full crown. This uniformity is important for avenue and alignment planting where mixed colour from seedling stock can read as inconsistency rather than variety. Full sun exposure is essential to achieve the strongest colour; trees planted in partial shade or north-facing positions will produce a muted display. The five-lobed, star-shaped leaves are glossy and bright green through summer, and the furrowed grey bark and persistent spiny fruit clusters extend visual interest into winter.

In the humid north of Portugal, including the Minho and Douro valleys where Diaplant grows its stock in Amarante (approximately 950 mm annual rainfall), Liquidambar performs well on the acidic granite-derived soils typical of the region. In Greater Lisbon and Porto, the species tolerates summer heat, reflected pavement radiation and moderate air pollution. Established trees withstand moderate drought, though in interior Alentejo sites with prolonged summer temperatures above 40 degrees C, supplementary irrigation during the first two to three summers after planting is advisable. Salt tolerance is low, so ‘Paarl’ is not appropriate for exposed coastal Algarve frontline positions or estuarine sites with salt-laden wind.

The spiny, globose fruit clusters (approximately 2 to 3 cm diameter) fall through winter and early spring. On paved surfaces around praças or pedestrian zones, this litter requires seasonal clearance and should be noted in maintenance schedules (caderno de encargos). The shallow, spreading root system can lift thin pavements over time; a root deflection barrier or adequate tree pit depth should be specified for street plantings. Disease and pest pressure is low across all Portuguese climate zones, and the species shows no significant susceptibility to the pathogens currently of concern in Portugal.
