Sweet Gum ‘Globosa’ · Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Globosa’

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Globosa' carries the autumn performance of the parent species on a compact, naturally symmetrical frame. The crown forms a dense globose head three to five metres across at maturity, on a single grafted stem, without requiring formative pruning. Specifiers can treat it as a small feature specimen or a low-canopy framework tree where the standard species would outgrow the available envelope.

Foliage is the palmate, deeply lobed star characteristic of the species, glossy mid-green through spring and summer. In autumn the leaves turn through yellow, orange, red and purple in mixed sequence, often holding on the tree well into the cooler months. Full sun is required for autumn intensity; partial shade dulls the colour without otherwise affecting the plant.

In Portuguese conditions the cultivar performs reliably across Greater Lisbon and Greater Porto street and praca planting, in residential schemes in the humid Minho and Douro, and in Alentejo gardens where an establishment irrigation cycle is provided. It prefers fertile, fresh, well-drained soils, ideally neutral to slightly acidic, and tolerates the clay-rich substrates common around Amarante where the stock is grown. Drought tolerance is moderate once established; on the coastal Algarve and in the interior Alentejo, supplementary summer irrigation in the first three years secures the autumn show. Urban pollution and root compaction are tolerated; salt-laden coastal air is not.

Maintenance is low. The grafted globose form does not require shaping, and the cultivar is sparsely fruiting compared with the species, reducing the gum-ball litter that constrains the use of standard L. styraciflua over paved surfaces. Growth is slow to moderate, which suits municipal budgets and confined root volumes. Field-grown in Amarante on Diaplant's 33 hectares (approximately 950 mm annual rainfall, mild winters, dry summers), the specimens leave the nursery acclimated to Iberian conditions.
