About this Species

Loureiro forms a conical to multi-stemmed evergreen, typically reaching 5 to 8 m in Portuguese cultivation and only 10 to 12 m on undisturbed mature sites. Foliage is leathery, aromatic, blue-green above and paler on the reverse; the bark is fissured dark grey. The species tolerates hard clipping, which makes it the standard choice for formal hedging, topiary forms, and clear-stem standards specified along an alameda or around a praça.

Native to the Mediterranean Basin and one of the relict laurel-forest species still recorded in north-central Portugal, loureiro withstands the prolonged summer drought of the Algarve and interior Alentejo once established, though drought tolerance is moderate rather than absolute: deep planting and a single establishment irrigation cycle are advisable in Alentejo sites receiving under 600 mm of rainfall. Root behaviour is non-aggressive, which suits arruamento and praça planting where services run shallow. The species is dioecious; mature female plants produce small black drupes which can stain paving in autumn, and specification along paved alignments should account for this litter or favour male specimens where available. Pruning is responsive: the species tolerates crown lifting and reshaping without dieback. Pest pressure includes the jumping plant louse Trioza alacris, which curls leaf margins, and scale insects; both are manageable under standard fitossanitário monitoring, while Phytophthora is the main soil-borne risk in humid Minho conditions.
