Crape Myrtle ‘Violacea’ · Lagerstroemia indica ‘Violacea’

Lagerstroemia indica 'Violacea' is a deciduous, multi-stemmed small tree reaching 4 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 5 metres wide at maturity, with a rounded, well-balanced crown. The cultivar carries violet to deep purple panicles from July through September, presented on the current season's growth and held above dark green, glossy summer foliage that turns yellow, orange, and red before leaf fall.

Growth in Portuguese conditions is moderate, which makes the species useful as a controlled feature specimen rather than a fast canopy tree. The smooth bark exfoliates in plates to reveal pale patches beneath, providing structural interest through the deciduous winter and reading well against rendered walls or paving in urban settings.

The species performs reliably in full sun across the principal Portuguese climate zones, with full exposure being a precondition for vigorous flowering. It accepts fertile, deep, well-drained soils ranging from acidic substrates through sand to clay, and tolerates urban heat, reflected radiation, and air pollution, which supports its use in Greater Lisbon and Greater Porto streetscapes. Heat performance extends to interior Alentejo summers; short drought periods are tolerated once established, though deep planting and a measured establishment irrigation cycle are advisable in low-rainfall zones. Hardiness covers zones 7a to 10b, comfortably spanning the national range. Salt tolerance is limited, which constrains use on exposed Algarve and Costa Vicentina frontages.

Maintenance is modest. Occasional summer irrigation supports flowering intensity on free-draining soils; light formative pruning in late winter encourages crown shape and the production of flowering wood. Litter is restricted to leaf fall and persistent dry capsules, with no significant implication for paving. The species is moderately resistant to common pests and diseases, with powdery mildew the principal pressure to monitor in humid Minho and Douro sites.

The tree functions as an isolated feature, in small groups within a praça, or in low alignments where the summer flowering carries the scheme. It pairs effectively with the structural canopy provided by plátano (Platanus × acerifolia), tília, or freixo in mixed plantings.
