Golden Rain Tree · Koelreuteria paniculata
{# A tabela de LOTES (§C, «zoom no lote») foi movida para baixo das características (botânica em cima, lotes em baixo — reunião 24/07). Ver #crm-lotes mais abaixo. #}A medium-sized deciduous tree specified for summer flower and urban resilience on dry alkaline soils, well suited to Portuguese street alignments, public squares (praças), and parking shade where flowering interest is required in July and August.
- Yellow midsummer flower sprays followed by lantern-shaped seed capsules into autumn
- Reliable drought tolerance on alkaline clay across the Algarve and Alentejo

About this Species
Koelreuteria paniculata reaches 8 to 12 m in height with an equivalent spread, forming a rounded to spreading crown on a single stem. Mature specimens carry pinnately compound leaves 15 to 45 cm long that emerge bronze, mature vivid green, and shift to gold-yellow in autumn. Large terminal panicles of yellow star-shaped flowers open in July and August, followed by papery three-valved capsules that resemble Chinese lanterns and persist from late summer into winter. The bark is grey-brown with shallow furrows, lending visual interest in the dormant season.
The species performs reliably across the principal Portuguese climate zones. Field observation on schist-derived soils with approximately 950 mm of annual rainfall and dry summers shows it tolerates both the calcareous substrates of urban Lisbon and the prolonged summer drought of coastal Algarve schemes once established. In the interior Alentejo, a single establishment irrigation cycle and adequate planting depth support the first…

In the interior Alentejo, a single establishment irrigation cycle and adequate planting depth support the first two summers. The deep, well-developed root system underpins this drought tolerance. Frost hardiness extends well below minus 15 degrees C, which covers every continental winter event recorded in mainland Portugal.
Tolerance of alkaline, loamy, and clay soils is broad, provided drainage is adequate. The species withstands urban air pollution, reflected pavement heat, and moderate salt exposure on estuarine and coastal sites. Disease pressure is low in Portuguese conditions, with no significant susceptibility to the pathogens currently driving losses in native Quercus stocks (Phytophthora cinnamomi) or in pine and ash.
Maintenance is modest. Formative pruning during the first three winters establishes a clean, well-balanced framework; thereafter intervention is occasional. Wood is moderately brittle, so storm-exposed sites benefit from structural pruning to reduce included bark. Flower and capsule litter should be considered where the tree overhangs paved hardscape. Self-seeding occurs on disturbed open ground and is worth flagging to the client where it could colonise adjacent semi-natural areas.
Koelreuteria paniculata offers what few medium-sized trees deliver on a Portuguese project: dependable summer flower paired with urban tolerance on a smaller footprint than Platanus x acerifolia (plátano).
