Honey Locust ‘Sunburst’ · Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Sunburst’

The golden-leaved form of the honey locust (espinheiro-da-virgínia) reaches roughly 10 to 15 metres in height and 8 to 10 metres in spread in Portuguese cultivation, forming a rounded, airy crown on a single clear stem. The finely divided compound leaves emerge yellow-gold in spring, settle to yellow-green through summer, and return to warm tones in autumn, giving the tree a continuous chromatic interest across the seasons. Unlike the wild species, this cultivar is effectively thornless, which makes it appropriate for streets, squares (praças), and residential schemes where public contact is a concern.

Growth is moderate, and the open canopy casts a light, luminous shade rather than dense cover, so the tree suits a public square (praça) or a parking area where filtered light below the crown is wanted. Specified as a feature specimen, in small groups, or in street alignments (arruamentos), it provides structural planting with a distinct colour signature that few framework trees of its scale offer.

The cultivar adapts to a wide range of soils provided they drain freely, and it prefers full sun, where the golden colouring holds its intensity; in shade the foliage tends towards green. It tolerates urban pollution, summer heat, wind, and moderate drought, which suits it to the reflected heat and limestone-derived soils of urban Lisbon and to the calcareous, sandy ground of the coastal Algarve. In the hot, dry interior Alentejo, a single establishment irrigation cycle through the first summers is advisable, after which the tree carries the seasonal heat with little support.

Maintenance is low once the tree is established. Formative pruning to a clear stem is the main early requirement, and the fine foliage breaks down readily rather than littering paved areas. Diaplant grows the cultivar in open ground (cultivado em pleno solo) at Amarante, where annual rainfall of around 950 millimetres, mild winters, and dry summers give specimens that establish reliably across the range of Portuguese project conditions.
