Key Facts
About this Cultivar
Gleditsia triacanthos 'Inermis' (espinheiro-da-virgínia) reaches 12 to 18 metres in height and 8 to 12 metres in spread at maturity in Portuguese cultivation, forming a broad, slightly irregular, open-textured crown. The pinnately compound foliage is fine and feathery, casting a light dappled shade that allows underplanting and turf to persist below, in contrast to the denser shadow of plátano (Platanus × acerifolia) or tília (Tilia spp.). Foliage turns clear golden yellow in autumn before falling. The cultivar is virtually thornless, unlike the parent species which carries formidable branched thorns, which is the trait that admits this tree to specifications for streets, schoolyards and public squares.
Growth is fast, with field-grown specimens establishing quickly to a defensible framework calibre. Trunks are typically single-stem with a clean leader and well-spaced scaffold branches, well suited to crown lifting for vehicle clearance on arruamento applications. Pod production is…

Growth is fast, with field-grown specimens establishing quickly to a defensible framework calibre. Trunks are typically single-stem with a clean leader and well-spaced scaffold branches, well suited to crown lifting for vehicle clearance on arruamento applications. Pod production is generally light on this clone in maritime Portuguese conditions and heavier in hotter, drier interior sites; litter on paving is correspondingly modest in the north and worth anticipating in the south.
Performance is reliable across the principal Portuguese climate zones. The species tolerates the calcareous and limestone-derived soils of Greater Lisbon, the sandy and calcareous substrates of the Algarve quinta context, and the deeper schist and alluvial soils of the interior Alentejo. It withstands prolonged summer heat above 40 degrees C, reflected pavement heat, urban pollution and wind, and moderate drought once established. In the humid Minho and Douro it accepts the higher rainfall provided drainage is adequate. Diaplant grows this cultivar in Amarante under roughly 950 mm of annual rainfall with mild winters and dry summers, which approximates the establishment envelope across most of mainland Portugal.
Maintenance is low. A single establishment irrigation cycle is advisable in the interior Alentejo and inland Algarve; coastal Algarve and Lisbon schemes generally require no supplementary irrigation after the third summer. Formative pruning sets the scaffold; the species responds well to crown lifting where municipal works require it. Pest and disease pressure in Portugal is low; the deep root system supports a long life as a structural urban tree.
