Maidenhair Tree ‘Blagon’ · Ginkgo biloba ‘Blagon’

This cultivar holds a distinctly upright, columnar crown. In maturity it reaches 12 to 15 metres in height but only 3 to 5 metres in width, forming a narrow, dense, well-structured outline. The form suits a single-stem feature specimen and reads cleanly in repeated alignment, where the slim profile lets the specifier place trees close together without lateral conflict over a carriageway or footway.

The fan-shaped leaves carry the parallel venation typical of the species. They are light green through spring and summer and turn an intense golden yellow in autumn. On the narrow 'Blagon' crown this autumn phase concentrates into a vertical column of gold, a strong structural effect for a praca or a formal garden axis.

Growth is slow to moderate, which keeps the form compact and reduces the frequency of corrective pruning over the tree's working life. The species establishes on a range of well-drained soils, acidic through alkaline, and prefers full sun. It withstands the demanding conditions of urban sites: atmospheric pollution, compacted soils, and moderate drought once established. Ginkgo is also largely free of the common pests and diseases, so a Portuguese scheme carries low phytosanitary risk over time.

Across Portuguese conditions the tree suits the warm, dry summers of the interior Alentejo and the mild coastal climates of Greater Lisbon and the Algarve, provided drainage is sound and a single establishment irrigation cycle is given on drier sites. Diaplant grows this material in the open field at Amarante (cultivado em pleno solo), under roughly 950 mm of annual rainfall with mild winters and dry summers, so the specimens are conditioned to Iberian light and seasonal water stress before delivery.
