Mature trees reach 20 to 40 m in height with a 12 to 20 m spread, occasionally taller on the deepest, best-drained sites. The crown is pyramidal in youth and develops the recognisable flat-topped, horizontally tiered silhouette over four to six decades, with lower branches typically retained to ground level. Growth is slow, with field specimens often reaching only 6 to 7 m in the first two decades; this is a framework tree for a generational timescale, not a quick-canopy alignment species.

The species suits the deep, acidic granite and schist soils of the Minho and Douro, where it establishes reliably under 1200 to 1800 mm of annual rainfall, and performs equally well in the drier interior Alentejo given unimpeded drainage and a single establishment irrigation cycle. It tolerates summer heat above 40 degrees C and winter frost down to roughly minus 20 degrees C, covering the full Portuguese climatic range. It does not tolerate compacted or waterlogged ground, and salt-spray tolerance is low, which excludes the immediate coastal strip in Algarve and Costa Vicentina schemes.

Maintenance is low. The species needs no regular pruning once form is established, although formative work in early years can be used to secure a single leader where a more upright profile is wanted; pruning is best performed in autumn. Litter is modest, restricted to needle drop and the occasional ripened cone, and root behaviour is non-aggressive, posing no recorded risk to adjacent paving or buried services in well-drained soils. Phytosanitary pressure under Portuguese conditions is minimal: tip blight and root rot occur only on poorly drained sites, and the species is not a recorded host for the Phytophthora cinnamomi damage affecting Quercus suber and Q. rotundifolia in the montado.

Cedrus libani has a continuous presence in Portuguese ornamental horticulture since the nineteenth century, from the romantic gardens at Monserrate and Buçaco to the quinta avenues of the Douro. Field-grown specimens raised in Amarante under approximately 950 mm of annual rainfall, mild winters and dry summers arrive acclimatised to the Atlantic-influenced Iberian regime, with a torrão developed on the species' preferred acidic loam.
