Carpinus betulus reaches 15 to 25 m at maturity, with a pyramidal crown in youth that broadens to an oval-rounded silhouette in adult specimens. The trunk is distinctively fluted, with smooth grey bark that appears muscled under the surface, giving the species a recognisable winter character. Leaves are ovate, doubly serrated, and 4 to 9 cm long, with prominent corrugated veining that holds dense, clean foliage through the growing season.

This is a tree for the Atlantic-influenced north. It thrives in the humid Minho and Douro under 1200 to 1800 mm of annual rainfall, performs reliably in Greater Porto schemes, and grows steadily in Amarante's domestic-supply context (around 950 mm, mild winters, dry summers). Drought tolerance is moderate rather than absolute, and salt tolerance is low. Specifiers working the coastal Algarve, the interior Alentejo, or estuarine Lisbon should expect supplementary irrigation through summer and avoid exposed maritime positions. The species tolerates heavy clay better than European beech (faia), which extends its usefulness on the seasonally wet schist and granite soils of the north.

The species suits several specification roles: a framework tree on the arruamento, a feature specimen in a praca or alameda, or a structural element in formal hedging where it takes hard pruning without loss of vigour. The 'Fastigiata' and 'Frans Fontaine' selections offer narrower columnar habits suitable for tighter alignments. Young and clipped specimens retain dead foliage through winter (marcescence), useful where a deciduous screen must continue to read in the cold months.

Maintenance demands are low. The species has no serious pest or disease pressure documented across its European range, accepts formative pruning and crown lifting readily, and tolerates the heavy reductions associated with the French bosquet tradition that shaped its long European cultivation. Fruit and leaf litter are modest and pose no specific problem for paved surfaces. Carpinus betulus is widely planted across Atlantic Europe with a documented track record on heavy soils, which gives the paisagista a defensible specification on humid northern Portuguese projects.
