Betula pendula 'Fastigiata', known in Portugal as bétula-colunar, is a deciduous tree of medium stature with a narrow, upswept crown and the silver-white exfoliating bark of the species. Mature dimensions in cultivation are 10 to 15 m in height and 2 to 4 m in width, producing a dense columnar silhouette in contrast to the type species' pendulous habit. Triangular, finely toothed leaves are bright green through the growing season and turn clear yellow in autumn, contrasting with the pale trunk.

Performance in Portugal tracks the species' Atlantic-northern provenance. The cultivar establishes reliably in the humid Minho and Douro, where rainfall of 1200 to 1800 mm and milder summers suit its preference for moist, well-drained soils. In Greater Lisbon it can be specified with confidence where irrigation is available and root zones are buffered from reflected pavement heat. In the interior Alentejo and across the Algarve it reaches the limits of its envelope: prolonged drought and temperatures repeatedly above 35 degrees C predict shortened useful life and elevated borer pressure, and other framework trees are the more defensible choice for these zones.

The columnar habit makes this cultivar specifiable where the type species cannot fit. It suits narrow street alignments (arruamento), contemporary courtyards and small praças, building entrances, and structural repetition in modern residential schemes. As a feature specimen in a private quinta it reads as a vertical accent rather than a shade tree, since the crown casts only light dappled shade. Compare its role to Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' in alignment work: the silhouette is similarly disciplined, with the silver bark adding winter interest.

Maintenance is modest. The crown holds its columnar form without remedial pruning, and structural work should be done in the dormant season to avoid the heavy spring sap flow typical of the genus. Litter is light: small leaves, fine twigs, and short catkins, manageable on paved surfaces. The principal phytosanitary watchpoint is the heat-stress dieback that affects this species wherever summers run hot and dry, which is reason enough to restrict the cultivar to better-suited zones and maintain root-zone moisture through the first establishment summers.
