An architectural evergreen for cooler, wetter Portugal
Monkey Puzzle Tree · Araucaria araucana
{# A tabela de LOTES (§C, «zoom no lote») foi movida para baixo das características (botânica em cima, lotes em baixo — reunião 24/07). Ver #crm-lotes mais abaixo. #}A slow-growing evergreen conifer specified as a feature specimen in projects across the humid Minho and Douro, and in select coastal and Atlantic-influenced Portuguese sites where its sculptural crown anchors the scheme.
- Belongs in the Minho, Greater Porto, the Douro uplands and Sintra
- Reliably hardy to around minus twenty degrees, untroubled by Portuguese winter
- Plant young, in deep well-drained soil, and leave undisturbed
About this Species
Native to the volcanic Andean slopes of southern Chile and western Argentina, Araucaria araucana develops a loose pyramidal silhouette in juvenile years and broadens to an umbrella-like parasol crown on a straight, ridged grey-brown trunk as it matures. Horizontal whorled branches carry rope-like branchlets densely covered in triangular, leathery, spine-tipped leaves that persist for ten to fifteen years. The form is unmistakable and dissimilar to any species commonly specified in Portugal, which is why it functions as a feature specimen rather than as structural or framework planting.
This is a maritime-climate species. It performs well in the humid Minho and Douro, where Atlantic influence delivers 1200 to 1800 mm of annual rainfall, mild winters, and cooler summers compatible with the tree's moderate heat tolerance. In Amarante, where Diaplant has direct experience growing the species under approximately 950 mm annual rainfall and dry summers, conditions sit at the dry margin of…

In Amarante, where Diaplant has direct experience growing the species under approximately 950 mm annual rainfall and dry summers, conditions sit at the dry margin of what Araucaria araucana accepts without supplementary irrigation. In Greater Lisbon it can be specified on cooler estuary-influenced sites with reliable irrigation; in the interior Alentejo and the coastal Algarve, prolonged summer drought combined with reflected heat make it a poor specification choice.
Hardy from approximately minus 15 degrees C upward, the species requires full sun and deep, well-drained loamy soils. It tolerates maritime exposure on Atlantic coastal sites, though salt tolerance is limited and direct salt spray on the foliage should be avoided. The tree does not tolerate urban pollution and is therefore unsuited to busy Lisbon arruamentos (street alignments); allow generous setback from paving and hardscape in any setting, as the surface root system can lift slabs and kerbs at maturity.
The species is dioecious and ornamentally consistent year-round, with no flower or autumn-colour phase. It is generally pest and disease resistant, though older or water-stressed specimens are susceptible to Phytophthora where drainage fails or water tables fluctuate. No formative pruning is required; the tree self-shapes and resents hard pruning. Large female cones, when borne, drop to the ground at maturity and are a pedestrian hazard to consider in praça or alameda specifications.
