Norway Maple ‘Globosum’ · Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’

Acer platanoides 'Globosum' is a top-grafted form of the Norway maple, supplied as a standard stem at 1.8 to 2.2 metres and carrying a dense, naturally spherical crown that matures at 4 to 6 metres in diameter. Growth is very slow, and the crown holds its symmetry without regular formative pruning. The cultivar's defining role is repetition: a sequence of identical specimens delivered along an arruamento, around a parking array, or framing a building entrance.

In Portuguese conditions the cultivar is reliable across the country. It performs well in urban Lisbon under reflected pavement heat once an establishment irrigation cycle is in place, and across the humid Minho and Douro without supplementary water after the third summer. In the interior Alentejo and inland Algarve, summer moisture remains advisable through the establishment phase because the broad foliage transpires heavily in continental heat. The cultivar tolerates the salt-laden estuary air of central Lisbon and the calcareous soils of the Lisbon limestone belt.

Soil tolerance is broad. It accepts acidic, alkaline, sandy, and clay profiles provided drainage is functional. The root system is fibrous and non-aggressive, which makes the cultivar specifiable adjacent to paved surfaces conforming to Norma Portuguesa NP EN 1339 and over standard urban services. Resistance to urban pollution is moderate to good, and the species is largely free of significant pest pressure in Portuguese cultivation.

Maintenance is minimal. The crown self-regulates, so pruning is restricted to occasional crown cleaning and the removal of any reversion shoots emerging below the graft union. Autumn yellow foliage produces a contained leaf litter that suits paved environments. Specify where the brief requires a disciplined formal alignment at a scale below that of platano (Platanus x acerifolia) or tilia.
