Montpellier Maple · Acer monspessulanum

Acer monspessulanum is a small to medium deciduous tree, reaching 5 to 10 m in cultivation and occasionally 15 m on old specimens, with a rounded, densely branched crown carried on a smooth, dark grey bark that fissures finely with age. The leaves are small, leathery, glossy, dark green, and three-lobed (3 to 6 cm), distinct from the larger, paler, deeper-lobed leaf of Acer campestre.

Leaf drop occurs very late in the autumn, often in November, and is preceded by a strong orange colour phase. Greenish-yellow corymbs open in May, followed by paired samaras with parallel, often overlapping wings.

Performance across Portuguese climate zones reflects the species's native Mediterranean range. In the Algarve and on the calcareous strip of urban Lisbon, the leathery cuticle and deep root system support reliable performance under prolonged summer drought once established, with supplementary irrigation generally limited to the establishment phase.

In the interior Alentejo, where summer temperatures exceed 40 degrees C, the species tolerates the heat well but benefits from deeper planting and a single establishment irrigation cycle. In the humid Minho and Douro, it performs adequately on well-drained schist or granite-derived soils but resents prolonged waterlogging.

Maintenance pressure is low. The species shows resistance to the major pest and disease problems reported on other maples, and formative pruning in the first three to five years is sufficient to establish a clean structural framework.

Litter is moderate (small leaves, small samaras) and rarely a problem in paved settings. Useful life in an urban context is long, and the slow growth rate keeps clearance pruning predictable on tight street alignments (arruamento).

Within a Portuguese landscape brief the species fills a defensible role: a structural framework tree that suits a wider range of site conditions than the Mediterranean evergreens it is often specified alongside, including sobreiro (Quercus suber), azinheira (Quercus rotundifolia), and medronheiro (Arbutus unedo). Native range and soil tolerance also support its use on the shallow, dry calcareous substrates of urban Lisbon and inland Alentejo schemes.

Salt tolerance is low, so coastal placements should sit behind a primary wind line.
