Native to Portugal and the wider Mediterranean basin, this small, dense, drought-tolerant maple serves as a secondary canopy or alignment tree (arruamento) where summer heat and calcareous soils exclude Acer pseudoplatanus or Acer platanoides.

About this Species

Acer monspessulanum is a small to medium deciduous tree, reaching 5 to 10 m in cultivation and occasionally 15 m on old specimens, with a rounded, densely branched crown carried on a smooth, dark grey bark that fissures finely with age. The leaves are small, leathery, glossy, dark green, and three-lobed (3 to 6 cm), distinct from the larger, paler, deeper-lobed leaf of Acer campestre.

Leaf drop occurs very late in the autumn, often in November, and is preceded by a strong orange colour phase. Greenish-yellow corymbs open in May, followed by paired samaras with parallel, often overlapping wings.

Performance across Portuguese climate zones reflects the species's native Mediterranean range. In the Algarve and on the calcareous strip of urban Lisbon, the leathery cuticle and deep root system support reliable performance under prolonged summer drought once established, with supplementary irrigation generally limited to the establishment phase.
