The cultivar reaches 6 to 8 metres in height with a spread of 3 to 5 metres, forming a rounded, well-branched crown that reads clearly as a specimen even in winter silhouette. Growth is slow, building structural character over time rather than filling space quickly. The deciduous foliage is mid-green through summer, and autumn colour is modest, making the tree's primary seasonal contribution its spring flowering rather than a late-season display.

'Yellow River' flowers in early spring before leaf break, producing solitary, upright, cup-shaped blooms in pale yellow to cream-yellow. Individual flowers measure approximately 12 to 15 cm across and carry a light lemon fragrance detectable at close range. The yellow colouring distinguishes this cultivar from the white-flowered type species and from the ubiquitous Magnolia x soulangeana, offering a colour register that few other hardy magnolias provide. Flower buds are, however, susceptible to frost damage: even a light frost during the bloom window will brown the tepals. In areas where late spring frosts are common, siting against a south-facing wall or within the shelter of adjacent structures reduces this risk.

Winter hardiness extends to approximately minus 20 degrees Celsius for the woody structure. Reliable in Atlantic and warm-temperate continental climates across Western and Central Europe, including coastal Netherlands, the lower Rhine valley, the Po valley, southern England, Brittany, and the Atlantic seaboard. In continental climates east of a line through Berlin or at elevations above 400 metres, late frost damage to flower buds becomes frequent enough to compromise the tree's primary ornamental value, even where the plant itself survives.

Soil requirements are specific. The root system demands a moist, well-drained, acidic to slightly acidic substrate, ideally with a pH below 6.5 and high organic content. It does not tolerate waterlogging, prolonged drought, or highly alkaline soils. On compacted urban sites with poor drainage, raised planting or structural soil cells are advisable. Salt tolerance is low, ruling out exposed coastal positions or sites with winter road-salt spray.

As a specimen, 'Yellow River' is specified where a focal tree of moderate stature is needed and where the site can guarantee the soil and shelter conditions the cultivar requires. It is not a tree for exposed parkland or for sites where low maintenance is the primary criterion. Where those conditions are met, the combination of distinctive flower colour, compact habit, and clean architectural form justifies the care the tree asks for.
