Sweet Gum ‘Worplesdon’ · Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’

'Worplesdon' is a cutleaf selection of Liquidambar styraciflua that holds a noticeably narrower, more upright pyramidal silhouette than the seed-grown species, typically reaching 15 to 20 m in height and 6 to 8 m in spread at maturity. The deeply lobed palmate leaves emerge glossy mid-green, and the autumn sequence runs through orange, scarlet and deep purple with greater consistency and slightly earlier onset than is normal in the type, which is the trait the Award of Garden Merit recognises.

Climate envelope is broad. The species is reliably hardy across USDA zones 6 to 9, withstanding short winter minima down to about minus 23 °C in continental conditions, and well into zone 5 with shelter; reliable performance is the rule from the Mediterranean and Atlantic seaboards through Central Europe to the southern Baltic. Reliable autumn colour requires a properly warm summer, however, so plantings in cool maritime climates (western Scotland, western Ireland, the higher Norwegian coast) tend to disappoint in October even when the tree itself survives.

Site tolerance is wide. Full sun is essential for both growth rate and colour. Moist, deep, slightly acidic loam is ideal; the tree tolerates clay, periodic waterlogging and seasonal drought once established through its moderately deep root system, and reads as fully pavement-tolerant in tree-pit applications. Strongly alkaline soils trigger iron chlorosis and produce a muted autumn show, so high-pH urban substrates should be screened or amended.

For structural use, account for two species-level traits. The wood is brittle, so exposed wind sites benefit from group planting or staking through the establishment years. The spiked compound fruit ('gum-balls') becomes a litter concern in intensively used pedestrian zones; in avenue and parkland settings it reads as winter interest. Pest and disease profile is unremarkable across European conditions.
