Selected in Paarl, South Africa, and now established in European production, this cultivar addresses a specific limitation of the species type: unpredictable colour variation within the canopy. Where seedling sweet gums can display a patchwork of red, orange, yellow, and green on the same tree, ‘Paarl’ produces a more homogeneous progression from deep scarlet through purple to intense orange, distributed evenly across the crown. For schemes where visual consistency matters, whether along a boulevard or in a symmetrical park composition, this trait removes a significant specification risk.

The tree reaches 12 to 18 m in height with a spread of 6 to 8 m at maturity, forming a pyramidal to broadly oval crown on a straight central leader. Growth rate is moderate. The five-lobed, star-shaped leaves are a glossy mid-green through summer, turning late in the season and holding colour well into November in mild-winter locations. Grey, finely fissured bark and persistent spiny fruit clusters extend structural interest through winter, though the fruit should be noted as a maintenance consideration in high-footfall areas.

Hardiness is broad. The species is reliably winter-hardy to approximately minus 29 degrees Celsius (USDA zone 5a), placing most of continental Europe within range. Established trees tolerate prolonged summer heat above 35 degrees Celsius without visible stress where root depth is adequate. Drought tolerance is moderate once established; supplementary irrigation may be needed during the first two to three summers in dry continental or Mediterranean climates with annual rainfall below 600 mm. Salt tolerance is low, which limits use in exposed coastal frontline positions or where de-icing salt is applied heavily.

Soil adaptability is wider than often assumed. The cultivar performs on acidic, alkaline, sandy, and clay substrates, though the most intense autumn colour develops on acidic to neutral soils in full sun. On strongly alkaline ground with low organic matter, iron chlorosis remains a risk. Full pavement tolerance allows specification in tree pits with restricted soil volume, a practical advantage for urban alignments. For projects north of a line through Copenhagen or east of Warsaw, sheltered positions with reliable summer warmth are advisable to ensure adequate colour development before the first hard frost.
