Japanese Dogwood ‘Venus’ · Cornus kousa ‘Venus’

Cornus 'Venus' is a complex hybrid (Cornus kousa × Cornus nuttallii × Cornus chinensis) developed for floral scale and disease resistance, reaching 5 to 7 m tall and 4 to 6 m wide at maturity, with a rounded, balanced crown. The defining feature is the size of the bracts: white and pointed, often exceeding 12 cm across, set against the fresh green foliage that has already expanded by flowering. In the European urban-tree canon dominated by Platanus, Tilia and Acer platanoides, it occupies the smaller specimen niche where a Magnolia × soulangeana or an Amelanchier might otherwise be considered, but with a notably longer ornamental sequence.

The hardiness range, inherited from the parent species, is broad: reliably winter-hardy across USDA zones 5a to 8b (approximately minus 29 °C to minus 7 °C). This covers continental Central Europe, the Atlantic seaboard, Mediterranean and Pannonian basins, and southern Scandinavia. In zones colder than 5a, or in exposed positions east of a line through central Poland, performance becomes uncertain and shelter from drying winter winds is advisable. Heat tolerance is moderate: prolonged maxima above 35 °C are accepted where the root run remains cool and adequate summer moisture is available, but the cultivar is not a candidate for hot, dry inland sites without supplementary irrigation.

Soil preference is fertile, fresh and well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral; chalky or persistently waterlogged ground is unsuitable. In partial shade the bracts hold colour longer and foliage scorch is reduced; full sun is tolerated in cool-temperate and oceanic conditions, where flowering is heaviest. The cultivar carries documented resistance to dogwood anthracnose (Discula destructiva), the principal limitation on Cornus florida across Europe.

Growth is slow to moderate, and once established maintenance is light. The ornamental sequence carries four seasons of interest: large white bracts in late spring, glossy canopy through summer, scarlet to red-purple autumn colour over three to five weeks, and globose red drupes attractive to songbirds. Specified as isolated specimen, in informal groves, or as a transition between woodland edge and open lawn, the cultivar holds its role at a controlled mature stature.
