Juvenile trees hold a regular conical to pyramidal form on a single straight trunk, with whorls of horizontal, upward-arching branches and rope-like branchlets clothed in stiff, triangular scale-like leaves about 3 to 5 cm long. Individual leaves persist on the stem for ten to fifteen years, giving the crown an unusually dense, reptilian texture year-round. With maturity the lower branches are shed and the crown opens into the characteristic umbrella silhouette on a clean grey-brown ridged trunk. In European cultivation, expect 12 to 20 m in height over many decades, with a crown spread of 5 to 10 m and a growth rate consistently below 30 cm per year.

Climate envelope is the controlling specification variable. The species is reliably hardy to about minus 15 °C (USDA zone 7b), with successful long-established specimens recorded across coastal southern England, Ireland, Brittany, the Atlantic seaboard of France, the coastal Netherlands and Belgium, and the milder valleys of northern Italy. It is not a sound specification east of a line through Berlin or north of southern Scandinavia without significant shelter, and it does not perform well under prolonged continental summer maxima above 35 °C combined with low atmospheric humidity.

Site on deep, evenly moist, freely drained loams in full sun, with annual rainfall ideally above 700 mm distributed through the growing season. Salt tolerance is low, ruling out front-line coastal exposure, and the species does not tolerate sustained urban air pollution, which limits its use in dense city plantings. Surface roots can lift adjacent hardscape and the large female cones, which disintegrate to release nut-sized seeds, are a known litter consideration in pedestrian zones.

Disease and pest pressure under European conditions is low, with occasional scale, mealybug, and Phytophthora root rot on poorly drained sites. CITES Appendix I status applies only to wild-collected material; nursery-propagated stock is unrestricted and represents the only legitimate supply route into specification.
