Norway Maple ‘Globosum’ · Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’

'Globosum' is a top-grafted cultivar of Norway maple selected for a tight, naturally domed crown that holds its shape without structural pruning. Mature dimensions are modest by Acer platanoides standards: 4 to 6 m in height and a comparable spread, reached slowly. The graft union sits at standard height, producing a clear stem topped by a dense, symmetrical head, which is the form the specification almost always asks for.

Foliage is the broad five-lobed palmate leaf of the species, fresh green through spring and summer, turning a clean yellow to gold in autumn. Small yellow-green flowers appear in corymbs in April and May, before full leaf-out, and are taken by early-season pollinators. Crown density is high, giving a contained block of shade that suits paved settings and reads cleanly in formal repetition.

The climate envelope is wide. The parent species is reliably hardy to roughly minus 35 to minus 30 °C (USDA zones 3b to 7a), which makes 'Globosum' a defensible specification across the full temperate European range: Benelux and the Atlantic seaboard, the Po valley and alpine foothills, the Pannonian basin, the Baltic states and southern Scandinavia, and the continental interiors of Poland and Czechia. The tree tolerates urban pollution, compacted soils, and exposed sites, and accepts acidic to alkaline substrates with adequate drainage. Performance falls off only in deep summer drought without irrigation and on permanently waterlogged ground.

One caveat warrants explicit mention. Acer platanoides is listed as invasive in natural woodland in parts of the Nordic and Benelux regions, and several Northern European authorities discourage its use near sensitive habitats. The grafted standard form has markedly reduced presence as a seeding population compared with seedling Norway maple, and is typically accepted in hard urban contexts where seedling escape is not a concern, but specifiers working near woodland edges or designated habitats should verify the local authority position before specifying.
