Among the white oaks, this is the one that develops a broad, spreading head wider than the tree is tall, carried on a short, sturdy trunk with grey-brown, deeply fissured bark that thickens with age. Open-grown specimens reach 20 to 25 m in height with a comparable spread. Growth is medium, and the deep, pivoting root system that anchors the tree also lets it draw on subsoil moisture once established. It is a framework tree, specified where a project needs a focal canopy to hold the site for generations.

Unlike the evergreen Iberian oaks a specifier reaches for by default, the encina (Quercus ilex) and the alcornoque (Q. suber), this is a deciduous species native to the cooler, moister lowlands of Europe, including northern Spain. It performs most reliably in the humid Atlantic northwest (the cornisa cantábrica) of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country, where cool summers, wet winters and acidic soils match its needs. Cold is never the limiting factor: it withstands well below -20 °C and reads as fully hardy in any Spanish climate zone.

Water, not cold, is the specification variable. Drought tolerance is only moderate, so on the continental interior (the meseta) and across Mediterranean conditions it wants supplementary irrigation through its first two to three summers and a site that is not parched at maturity. It favours deep, moist, well-drained soils of near-neutral to acidic pH, adapts to clay and loam, and tolerates intermittent flooding near rivers, but is poorly suited to thin, dry calcareous ground and to salt exposure, which keeps it off exposed coastal sites.

The foliage is dark green, small and many-lobed, with the auricled leaf base distinctive to the species, turning yellow then brown in autumn before persisting into winter on younger growth. Crown density delivers genuine shade for parkland and estate settings, and the tree supports an exceptionally wide invertebrate and bird community. In humid summers expect some powdery mildew, cosmetic rather than structural. As a specimen, the heavy branch structure and domed crown that take decades to form are exactly what give a finished scheme its permanence.
