Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’

Bred in New Zealand as a more compact selection of Photinia × fraseri, 'Red Robin' delivers the genus's signature trick (a flush of brilliant cherry-red young foliage maturing through bronze to glossy dark green) on a denser, tighter framework than the straight hybrid. In Iberian cultivation it settles at three to four metres tall and two to three metres wide, with a rounded, compact crown that responds cleanly to clipping. That habit makes it a standard specification for formal hedges (setos formales), structural screens, and topiarised blocks where both year-round leaf cover and a recurring red flush are required.

It performs reliably across most of Spain. Along the Mediterranean coastal belt and the Balearics it carries the heat with moderate summer irrigation once established; in the humid Atlantic northwest (cornisa cantábrica) it tolerates the higher rainfall provided drainage is sound; on the meseta it is hardy to roughly -15 °C and steady through continental winters. In the semi-arid southeast (Almería, Murcia, inland Alicante) it needs supplementary drip through the first two to three summers and a position away from full afternoon reflection.

Water demand is moderate, not low. Mature plants tolerate short irrigation cut-offs but lose foliage gloss and the intensity of the red flush under prolonged drought, which matters where the planting is specified for its colour cycle. The cultivar's known weakness is Entomosporium leaf spot, favoured by high humidity and overhead irrigation. 'Red Robin' shows better resistance than the parent hybrid; siting in good air circulation and watering at root level keep pressure low.

Tolerant of loam, sand, and calcareous soils across the alkaline range typical of much of Spain, it also takes urban pollution and routine clipping without dieback, which is why municipal servicios de parques y jardines use it widely on framework planting.
