A cross between Magnolia denudata and M. liliiflora, this is among the most planted of the spring magnolias, so most readers picture it readily: a multi-stemmed small tree, 5 to 8 m tall and as wide, whose major branches sag outward over the years into the broad, layered crown of the mature form. The differentiator for a specification is the flowering phase. Nine-tepalled, cup-and-saucer to goblet-shaped flowers, white inside and flushed pink to purple outside, open in March and April before the foliage, giving a focal display no evergreen Mediterranean stalwart such as Quercus ilex (encina) or Olea offers.

Climate fit across Spain is governed by two variables: water and the timing of the flowers. The tree performs most easily in the humid Atlantic northwest (the cornisa cantabrica), where cool summers, reliable rainfall and acidic soils suit it without intervention. It is hardy to roughly minus 25 C, so winter cold is not the constraint; the flower buds, however, are disfigured by light frost, so on the continental interior (meseta), where late spring frosts are a real risk, a sheltered pocket and later-flowering siting protect the display.

Water demand is the first-order specification fact. Drought tolerance is low: the fleshy, shallow root system draws steadily and resents prolonged dry soil, so reliable moisture is needed through establishment and each summer in any zone with a pronounced dry season. On the Mediterranean coast (Levante) and in the warmer interior the tree depends on supplementary irrigation and afternoon shade, suiting irrigated gardens, courtyards and parks rather than low-water schemes. It prefers a moist, free-draining, acid to neutral loam; the saline, alkaline soils of the semi-arid southeast call for soil correction.

On site performance, the species sits outside the Xylella fastidiosa host range, simplifying coordination in demarcated areas where Olea and other hosts carry movement constraints. It is one of the more wind-tolerant magnolias, holding form in moderate exposure, though the fleshy roots ask for room to run and a position clear of heat-radiating walls. Disease and pest pressure is low in cultivation.
