The Golden Rain Tree (jabonero de China) reaches 8 to 12 m at maturity with an equal spread, forming a rounded, moderately spreading crown that opens with age. Bipinnately compound foliage emerges pinkish-bronze, matures to mid green, and turns golden-yellow in autumn where night temperatures drop. Mid to late summer brings 30 to 40 cm terminal panicles of small yellow flowers, followed by inflated three-valved papery capsules that shift from green through yellow to russet-brown and persist into winter, giving three distinct ornamental phases on one tree.

Climatic envelope across Spain is broad. The species is reliably hardy to roughly minus 20 °C, which covers the meseta continental winters of Castilla and Aragón as well as Mediterranean coastal and southern Atlantic conditions; late spring frost risk on the interior plateau is not a limiting factor for this taxon. Heat tolerance is high, and the tree carries the prolonged dry summers of the Levante and the inland southeast without scorch once established.

Water-use envelope makes Koelreuteria a defensible specification under the water-planning requirements (proyecto de ajardinamiento) now standard in many comunidad autónoma submissions. Regular irrigation is required through the first two to three summers to build the deep root system; thereafter the tree performs on rainfall alone across Mediterranean coastal and continental interior conditions, and accepts irrigation cut-offs during sequía restrictions without canopy collapse.

Site tolerance is wide. Soils may run from acidic Atlantic loam to the alkaline calcareous and mildly saline substrates of the eastern littoral; compacted urban pits are accepted, as is the urban air pollution of dense city centres. The species sits outside the known Xylella fastidiosa host list, a positive position in current Spanish specification practice. Wood is moderately brittle and exposed sites with strong winter winds warrant structural pruning while specimens are young.

Functional role is as a summer-flowering shade tree for streets, plazas, car parks, and residential courtyards where the alternative palette of plátano de sombra, almendro, or Tipuana tipu is unsuitable on grounds of scale, allergen load, frost limit, or phytosanitary status.
