Maidenhair Tree ‘Blagon’ · Ginkgo biloba ‘Blagon’

The defining character of 'Blagon' is its habit. Where the straight species spreads broadly with age, this cultivar holds a dense, columnar crown, reaching roughly 12 to 15 metres in height but only 3 to 5 metres in width at maturity. That narrow footprint makes it a working alternative to broad-crowned avenue trees such as the platano de sombra (Platanus x acerifolia) where canopy width cannot be accommodated. The fan-shaped foliage turns an intense golden yellow in autumn, concentrated by the upright form into a vertical column.

Climate performance across Spain is wide. The species is hardy well below -12 degrees C, so the cold continental winters and late spring frosts of the central plateau (meseta) present no difficulty. It equally tolerates the hot dry summers of the Mediterranean coast and the mild wet winters of the humid Atlantic northwest (cornisa cantabrica), and heat tolerance is high.

Water demand is moderate and falls as the tree establishes. It needs regular irrigation through the first two to three summers to build the root system; thereafter it tolerates moderate drought and reduced summer watering, which matters where landscape submissions (proyecto de ajardinamiento) must account for water use. In the harsher semi-arid southeast, supplementary summer water remains advisable on the most exposed sites.

Ginkgo accepts acidic Atlantic soils, the alkaline and calcareous substrates common across much of Spain, and compacted urban material, provided drainage is adequate. Its tolerance of paving and pollution suits confined urban pits. The genus is notably free of serious pests and diseases and sits outside the host range of Xylella fastidiosa, which recommends it where the reader needs a structural alignment tree without the phytosanitary exposure carried by Olea or certain Quercus.

Growth is slow to moderate, so 'Blagon' holds its specified form and proportions for many years with little intervention. The narrow crown asks for minimal formative pruning, and the autumn display reads as a specification asset in northern Spanish schemes where deciduous colour is part of the visual programme.
