A graceful shade tree for Spanish gardens
European Nettle Tree · Celtis australis
{# A tabela de LOTES (§C, «zoom no lote») foi movida para baixo das características (botânica em cima, lotes em baixo — reunião 24/07). Ver #crm-lotes mais abaixo. #}An autochthonous Iberian species (especie autóctona) for projects across mediterranean coastal, meseta interior, and southeastern semi-arid Spain. Almez offers a rounded shade canopy with low mature water demand and no recorded Xylella fastidiosa host status.
- Thrives across the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Balearics and greater Madrid
- Modest summer water for the first three seasons; self-sufficient thereafter
- Accepts alkaline clay, chalk, sand and loam with free drainage
About this Species
Almez is one of the few large shade trees genuinely native to the Iberian Peninsula, and Spanish servicios de parques y jardines have used it for decades on plaza, avenue, and parking-lot plantings. For an international specifier, the closest functional analogues are Platanus × acerifolia and Tipuana tipu in mediterranean cities, but almez sits within a lower water envelope than either. It is not a substitute for evergreen structure; it is a deciduous canopy specimen that earns its place through summer shade and reliability.
Performance is reliable across all four Spanish climate zones. On the mediterranean littoral (Levante, Balearics, Costa del Sol) it accepts hot dry summers, alkaline soils, and moderate salt exposure on inland coastal sites. On the meseta it tolerates winter minima down to roughly -15 °C and the wide diurnal range of Castilian and Aragonese summers; in the cornisa cantábrica it accepts cooler wet conditions and acidic soils, though autumn yellow is…

Performance is reliable across all four Spanish climate zones. On the mediterranean littoral (Levante, Balearics, Costa del Sol) it accepts hot dry summers, alkaline soils, and moderate salt exposure on inland coastal sites. On the meseta it tolerates winter minima down to roughly -15 °C and the wide diurnal range of Castilian and Aragonese summers; in the cornisa cantábrica it accepts cooler wet conditions and acidic soils, though autumn yellow is briefer than in continental positions. In Almería, Murcia, and inland Alicante it holds form on calcareous and gypsiferous substrates where many imported mediterranean species struggle.
Water demand is modest once established. Two to three summers of supplementary irrigation through the establishment phase, then the species draws down to ambient rainfall under most peninsular conditions, holding canopy through sequía episodes that defoliate Platanus. Almez sits outside the documented host range of Xylella fastidiosa and is not subject to the demarcation regimes affecting Olea, Polygala myrtifolia, or Nerium oleander; for projects in or adjacent to demarcated zones in Alicante, the Balearics, or Andalucía, that absence is a specification advantage.
The mature crown is rounded to spreading, reaching 15 to 25 m in height with 10 to 15 m of spread on open sites. Smooth grey bark on a clean bole reads as architectural rather than ornamental, suiting jardín andaluz renovations and contemporary plaza palettes alike. Pest and disease resistance is strong, root architecture sits comfortably in urban pits and compacted meseta clays, and the small purple drupes are taken by birds with negligible litter on paved surfaces.
