A golden conifer for the larger Spanish garden
Deodar Cedar ‘Aurea’ · Cedrus deodara ‘Aurea’
{# A tabela de LOTES (§C, «zoom no lote») foi movida para baixo das características (botânica em cima, lotes em baixo — reunião 24/07). Ver #crm-lotes mais abaixo. #}A golden-needled selection of the Himalayan cedar, specified where a project requires a large evergreen focal point in colour. Suited to deep, well-drained soils on sheltered sites across most of peninsular Spain.
- Slow-growing golden conifer reaching 15 to 20 m at maturity
- Best on the Costa Brava, the Empordà, and cooler Mallorcan foothills
- Three seasons of drip-line watering; self-sufficient thereafter where rainfall reaches 500 mm

About this Cultivar
The cultivar carries the architecture of the straight species, a broad pyramidal crown with the gracefully pendulous shoot tips characteristic of Cedrus deodara, but reads first as colour. Young needles flush a clear golden yellow in spring and through summer, softening to greyer green on older wood, so the canopy holds a two-tone glow rather than a flat tint. Colour tracks light exposure: in full sun the gold reads at distance, while shaded specimens drift toward grey-green. Mature dimensions stay smaller than the species, typically 15 to 20 m tall and 6 to 10 m wide, on a moderate growth rate.
Performance across Spain follows the species. The cedar is reliable on the Atlantic strip (cornisa cantábrica), the northern interior and along the Mediterranean littoral, holding hardiness to roughly -15 °C and tolerating Iberian summer heat better than other true cedars. On the central plateau (meseta), siting requires shelter from desiccating winter winds and late spring frost pockets,…

Performance across Spain follows the species. The cedar is reliable on the Atlantic strip (cornisa cantábrica), the northern interior and along the Mediterranean littoral, holding hardiness to roughly -15 °C and tolerating Iberian summer heat better than other true cedars. On the central plateau (meseta), siting requires shelter from desiccating winter winds and late spring frost pockets, particularly in northern Castilla and Aragón. It is not suited to the semi-arid southeast (Almería, inland Murcia), where aridity and saline soils press beyond its envelope.
Water use is moderate, not low. The tree asks for reliable irrigation through the first two to three summers while the deep root system establishes, after which it carries short drought episodes well on a deep soil profile. It does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging and declines on heavy, poorly drained clays. Deep, well-drained loams of slightly acidic to neutral reaction give the best performance; it accepts moderately alkaline calcareous soils but not gypsiferous or saline sites. Salt-spray tolerance is low, ruling it out on exposed coastal frontages.
It is specified as a single focal specimen or a colour accent within a darker evergreen palette of encina, pino piñonero or ciprés mediterráneo. It functions where a designer would otherwise reach for a golden conifer in northern European references but needs Iberian heat tolerance. Outside the Xylella fastidiosa host range, it carries no acute phytosanitary issue currently affecting Spanish landscape specification (pliego de condiciones), with the standard species cautions on tip blight and root rot on wet ground.
