A sculptural deciduous tree for the cooler Spanish garden
Japanese Maple · Acer palmatum
{# A tabela de LOTES (§C, «zoom no lote») foi movida para baixo das características (botânica em cima, lotes em baixo — reunião 24/07). Ver #crm-lotes mais abaixo. #}A slow, small-stature deciduous specimen for sheltered, well-watered positions. In Spain the arce japonés performs reliably along the cornisa cantábrica and in cooler garden microclimates, prized for layered form and intense autumn colour.
- Suits the Atlantic north, Catalan pre-Pyrenees, and shaded Mallorcan gardens
- Rewards Costa del Sol gardens given deep shade and steady irrigation
- Wants dappled shade, evenly moist acidic loam, shelter from drying summer wind

About this Species
Reaching 4 to 8 metres in height and spread at maturity, Acer palmatum develops a layered, broadly rounded crown over slender stems that vary from green to reddish purple according to cultivar. The five to nine palmately lobed leaves carry the season's visual interest, shifting from spring tones through summer green or burgundy into yellow, orange, bronze and deep red in autumn. Growth is slow, which makes a field-grown specimen with established trunk character a meaningful starting point for any high-visibility position.
The climatic envelope in Spain is narrower than the species' nominal hardiness suggests. Winter cold tolerance reaches minima of around -20 °C in dormancy, well within continental meseta conditions, so cold is rarely the binding constraint. The real limits are summer heat, atmospheric dryness, and late spring frost on the soft young foliage. Reliable performance concentrates along the cornisa cantábrica, in the higher elevations of Galicia and the Sistema Central,…

Reliable performance concentrates along the cornisa cantábrica, in the higher elevations of Galicia and the Sistema Central, and in well-irrigated patio and courtyard positions in Madrid, Barcelona, and the northern Levante.
Soil preference is for acidic to neutral, evenly moist, well-drained loams with good organic content. Calcareous Mediterranean substrates induce chlorosis, and salt tolerance is low, which removes Acer palmatum from the coastal-exposure shortlist where Quercus ilex (encina), Olea europaea, or Brachychiton populneus would otherwise sit. The root system is fibrous and shallow, compatible with raised beds and large containers, but unforgiving of compacted urban substrates and intolerant of waterlogging.
Water demand is moderate but non-negotiable: the species does not perform under drought. Plan for regular irrigation through the first three summers to establish the root volume, and for sustained summer watering thereafter in any location south of the Cantabrian strip. Anchor it where you would otherwise reach for a small Cornus or a Magnolia stellata: a sculptural focal piece for a sheltered courtyard, an underplanted feature beneath taller canopy, or a contained presence in an architectural water-side composition.
