Japanese Maple ‘Atropurpureum’ · Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is a long-established purple-leaf selection of the Japanese maple (arce japonés), grown as a multi-stemmed small tree or large shrub. Where the straight species reaches 6 to 8 m, this cultivar settles at roughly 4 to 6 m in height by 3 to 4 m across, giving a tighter frame suited to courtyards, patios and confined ornamental beds. The five to seven lobed leaves open deep purple in spring, hold their tone through summer rather than fading to bronze-green as seedling forms do, and finish in luminous red before leaf fall.

Climatic performance is the decisive question for a specifier in Spain. The cultivar is hardy to roughly minus 18 °C, which covers the meseta interior including the late spring frosts of Castilla and Aragón, though young foliage can be scorched by hard late-frost events. Heat tolerance is moderate. Reliable summer performance sits in the humid Atlantic northwest (cornisa cantábrica) and at higher elevations of the interior; on the Mediterranean littoral and through the Levante the cultivar requires a shaded courtyard exposure and consistent root moisture. The semi-arid southeast is outside its working envelope.

Water demand is the second-order constraint. Roots are shallow and fibrous, and drought tolerance is low: expect supplementary irrigation through the establishment phase and continued summer watering at maturity wherever ambient rainfall falls below roughly 700 mm. The cultivar prefers a slightly acidic, free-draining loam with organic matter; alkaline calcareous soils common across the eastern littoral induce chlorosis and should be amended or avoided. Wind protection matters, since exposed positions accelerate leaf scorch.

Acer palmatum sits on the European host list for Xylella fastidiosa, and coordination with the servicio de parques y jardines on any active demarcation in the project area is part of normal specification practice. The cultivar is also susceptible to verticillium wilt on poorly drained sites and to aphid pressure in sheltered courtyards, both managed through site selection and drainage. Growth is slow: mature character generally reads at twelve to fifteen years from a field-grown specimen.
