Field Maple · Acer campestre

Acer campestre, the field maple (arce menor in Spanish landscape practice), is one of the few maples native to the Iberian Peninsula, present in the cooler central and northern interior and reaching the limit of its comfort range as one moves south. POWO maps it as native across Spain, though herbarium records suggest it is rarer in the deep south; the species' core specification zones inside Spain are therefore the Atlantic cornisa cantábrica, the wider Castilian meseta, the Pyrenean foothills, and Catalonia.

Hardiness extends to roughly minus 20 °C, comfortably covering interior continental winters in Castilla and Aragón, including late spring frosts that take out less resilient deciduous species.

Crown form at maturity is rounded and dense, typically 8 to 12 m in cultivation though wild specimens reach 15 to 25 m. The dense canopy casts heavy shade, which makes it useful where Platanus × acerifolia would once have been specified but where Ceratocystis platani pressure now argues for alternatives.

The species reads as a smaller, slower analogue of Platanus on urban streets: similar role, tighter crown, no canker susceptibility. It is not a Xylella host of phytosanitary concern.

Site performance is its real argument. It accepts alkaline and calcareous soils as readily as neutral ones, tolerates heavy clays of the meseta, and handles compaction and pollution well enough for urban pits and confined alignment situations.

The root system is shallow rather than aggressive, which helps with pavement compatibility but argues for adequate soil volume on hard-surface schemes. Drought tolerance is moderate once established; on the semi-arid sureste it is the wrong tree, and irrigation support remains worth specifying through the first three summers on most Spanish sites.

Foliage is the species' visible asset. Five-lobed, palmate leaves with milky-sapped petioles flush green in spring and turn yellow in autumn (more reliably so under the cooler Atlantic and meseta regimes than on the Mediterranean coast).

Older trunks develop shallowly fissured, faintly corky bark that holds visual interest through the deciduous winter. Powdery mildew is the recurring foliar pressure to monitor in irrigated schemes.
