The cultivar reaches 6 to 8 metres in height with a spread of 3 to 5 metres, forming a rounded, densely branched crown. Growth rate is slow, producing compact structure without intensive formative pruning. The pale yellow to cream cup-shaped flowers, 12 to 15 centimetres across, open in early spring before leaf emergence. This precocious flowering habit, shared with the species type, defines both the ornamental value and the primary site-planning constraint: exposed flowers are browned by air temperatures below minus 2 degrees Celsius, and a single late-frost night can destroy the entire spring display.

Winter hardiness of the established wood and root system extends to approximately minus 25 degrees Celsius on free-draining substrates, placing it within range of the Upper Rhine valley, the Lower Rhine basin, and sheltered urban positions in the Frankfurt and Stuttgart metropolitan areas. Performance east of the Elbe is not reliable: continental winter minima in the Northern German lowlands drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius with regularity, and exposed sites without urban heat-island moderation pose a cumulative risk of bud damage across successive winters. Young trees in their first three winters are more vulnerable than established specimens and require wind shelter.

Site requirements are specific. The cultivar demands moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral loams with organic matter content, performing best on substrates between pH 5.5 and 7.0. It does not tolerate waterlogged or highly calcareous soils, and drought stress during summer reduces flower-bud formation for the following spring. Salt tolerance is low, which excludes placement along salted streets or in coastal-influenced sites. These requirements rule out street-tree application; 'Yellow River' is not a Zukunftsbaum candidate.

Disease and pest resistance is a strength. Magnolia denudata and its cultivars carry no significant phytosanitary burden in central Europe. There is no genus-level epidemic comparable to ash dieback or the pressures on Aesculus and Buxus. Occasional susceptibility to coral spot (Nectria cinnabarina) and honey fungus (Armillaria) exists but is not a material specification risk on well-drained sites.

The specification case for 'Yellow River' rests on its colour. Among hardy magnolias available for German projects, yellow-flowering forms are rare. The familiar Magnolia x soulangeana cultivars and the white-flowering species type occupy the same early-spring niche but in white and pink tones. Where a project requires spring-flowering specimen trees with a warm colour register for a sheltered courtyard, park, or landscape setting, this cultivar fills a narrow but defensible role.
