Japanese Dogwood ‘Venus’ · Cornus kousa ‘Venus’

Bred at Rutgers University as a triple hybrid of Cornus kousa, C. nuttallii and C. chinensis, 'Venus' produces white bracts exceeding 12 cm across in late spring, the largest in the genus. The crown develops a balanced rounded Habitusform reaching 5 to 7 m and 4 to 6 m wide at maturity, slower in the first decade than the parent species. Foliage colours reddish-purple to scarlet in autumn, and older stems exfoliate into mottled tan and brown plates, giving structural interest after leaf-off.

Winter hardiness (Winterhärte) is reliable in cool temperate German conditions: established specimens tolerate around minus 20 to minus 23 degrees Celsius on free-draining substrate in sheltered positions, with the first three winters the risk window for young wood. The cultivar performs across the Niederrheinische Bucht (Lower Rhine basin), the Oberrheingraben (Upper Rhine valley), the Kölner Bucht, and most of the central uplands. Performance becomes marginal above 600 m in the voralpenland (pre-Alpine foothills) and on exposed eastern sites of the norddeutsche Tiefebene (northern German lowlands), where late frosts can damage opening bracts.

Site requirements (Standortansprüche) favour fertile, cool, well-drained loams in the slightly acid range; the cultivar is intolerant of waterlogging and shows nutrient deficiency above pH 7.5. De-icing salt tolerance is low, excluding the species from Straßenbaum positions on salted carriageways and from the GALK-Straßenbaumliste (the definitive German municipal street tree list). It functions instead as a Hausbaum, courtyard specimen, or Parkbaum under FLL guidelines (the German research and standards body for landscape construction), where confined root volumes are mitigated and establishment irrigation is available.

Disease resistance (Krankheitsresistenz) is a specification argument in itself: 'Venus' inherits the anthracnose resistance of Cornus kousa against Discula destructiva and is not affected by the phytosanitary pressures driving substitution among Eschen (Fraxinus) and Buchsbaum (Buxus). Pruning needs are minimal once the leader is established; the rounded crown architecture (Kronenaufbau) develops without intervention. Underplanting with acidophilic groundcover supports root temperature regulation during the increasingly hot Stadtklima summers that have reshaped urban planting priorities since the 2018 to 2022 drought sequence.
