Atlas Cedar · Cedrus atlantica

Cedrus atlantica is a true cedar from mountain stands at 1,170 to 2,200 metres in the Moroccan Atlas and the Algerian Tell Atlas. The Habitusform is loosely conical in youth and becomes flat-topped with long, near-horizontal branches at maturity, reaching 30 to 35 metres in cultivation with a 10 to 15 metre spread. Glauca Group selections carry the blue-grey foliage that drives most ornamental specification; seed-raised material varies from sea green to silver-blue.

Winterhärte is set by the species' continental mountain provenance rather than by its North African latitude. Established trees on free-draining sites tolerate minus 18 to minus 20 degrees Celsius without lasting damage; minus 15 degrees Celsius is the conservative working limit for young stock in open positions. The species performs reliably in the Oberrheingraben (Upper Rhine valley) and Niederrheinische Bucht (Lower Rhine basin), turns marginal in the voralpenland above roughly 400 metres, and carries elevated risk of young-wood damage in continental sites east of the Elbe.

Standortansprüche are exacting on drainage and undemanding on chemistry. The species takes deep, well-drained loams in full sun, tolerates calcareous substrates to pH 8 once established, and accepts sandy soils where summer moisture is adequate. Waterlogged ground and heavy compacted clays are the reliable failure modes. A deep pivoting Wurzelverhalten supports the drought tolerance once the tree is anchored, which makes Atlas Cedar a defensible candidate on Rhine loess and southern German limestone uplands through the hot dry summer sequences that have reshaped specification priorities since 2018.

On a German project the role is solitary park specimen rather than Straßenbaum. The species does not sit on the GALK-Straßenbaumliste and is not engineered for confined urban root volumes or routine de-icing salt exposure, but its heat and drought profile places it inside the Klima-Artenmatrix discussion for parkland, cemetery, and large-format private commissions in the Stadtwald and Landschaftspark tradition. Pest and disease pressure in German conditions is low, with no equivalent of the Eschentriebsterben or Russrindenkrankheit problems on Fraxinus and Acer pseudoplatanus. Heavy wet snow can break the long horizontal branches, which argues for a sheltered position with adequate crown space.
